Das Quartett hat das Album selbst aufgenommen und produziert, um es anschließend in die Hände von Justin Meldal-Johnson (M83, Wolf Alice) zu geben, der das finale Mixing ihres Post-Punk Gebräus übernahm. PREOCCUPATIONS Sound war schon immer geprägt von ihren Erkundungen rund um das Düstere und Dystopische im breiten Spektrum der Rock-Musik. Dabei arbeiteten sie sich besonders an den Themen Kreativität, Zerstörung und Sinnlosigkeit ab. „New Material“ begibt sich nun komplett auf die dunkle Seite der Musik. Das Resultat ist eine Sammlung von Songs, die das Standing der band im Genre untermauern. Sie sind nun wahre Meister ihres Fachs. Auf das neue Album angesprochen, antwortet Leadsänger, Songwriter und Bassist Matt Flegel: „It’s an ode to depression and self-sabotage“. Ohne mit im Vorfeld Geschriebenes oder Aufgenommenes, geriet der Prozess des Album-Schreibens zu einer im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes Kollaboration aller Bandmitglieder. Nie zuvor waren alle Musiker so intensiv an der Entstehung beteiligt. „Finishing „Espionage“ was when I realized, that I looked at the rest of the lyrics and saw the magnitude of what was wrong,“ erläutert Flegel.

Preoccupations are returning in 2018 with their strongest and most powerful album to date. „New Material“ builds a world that is dark and exhilarating by a band in their prime. The 4-piece self-recorded the album and then had Justin Meldal-Johnson (M83, Wolf Alice) taking care of the mixing to amplify the band’s singular post-punk grit. Their music has always been exploring the darker side of music and worked through themes of creation, destruction and futility. This time, the music is living fully on the darker side. The result is New Material, a collection of tracks that solidifies Preoccupations to be true masters of their sound.
